Bioinformatics Laboratory
METU-BIN Lab was established in 2011 by Asist. Prof. Yeşim Aydın Son, where Genomic Biomarkers Group and METU’s iGEM software team continue their research. Currently, METU-BIN Lab offers access to three high performance computers and two individual servers. Two web services developed through METU-BIN Lab for “Mining for BioBricks” and “METU/pi-SNP” applications are located on these servers.
Additionally METU-BIN Lab supports educational activities of Bioinformatics Graduate Program by providing access to specialized bioinformatics tools that are taught under the curriculum of BIN courses. All students in Bioinformatics Master Program benefits from the METU-BIN during their training and research.

Clinical Bioinformatics Group
P.I.: Yeşim Aydın Son
Members: Dr. Cengizhan Açıkel, Dr.Hüsamettin Gül, Özlem Özkaya, Onur Eroğlu, Alper Döm, Yener Tuncel
Group’s major goal is to provide knowledge and medical decision support tools for the application of biomarker research in Personalized Medicine.
Ongoing projects under Dr. Aydın Son’s supervision includes GWAS of various diseases (RA, JIA, AD, schizophrenia, obesity&diabetes, Behçet's disease, Melanoma and other cancers) for identification of disease associated SNP biomarkers and developing Medical Decision Support Systems integrating SNP associations and clinical data. Also the most efficient and acceptable methods for the integration of developed MDSS into hospital information systems and medical records is within our focus.
Other topics of interest of the P.I can be listed as methylation and miRNA Biomarkers, Microarray Data Analysis, Systems and Synthetic Biology, Visualization and Animation of Biomolecular Data, Translational Bioinformatics and Bioinformatics and Health Informatics Education.

Genomic Biomarkers Group works under the supervision of Asist. Prof. Dr. Yeşim Aydın Son investigating data mining and optimization tools that are available for the dimension reduction of high-throughput data that can be utilized for the development of prioritization and selection tools to be integrated to Genome Wide Association Studies pipeline for SNP genotyping data.
Our group recently released a java based integrated system METU-SNP (http://metu.edu.tr/~yesim/metu-snp.htm) , for genome wide association and prioritization of SNP biomarkers through novel AHP based algorithm. METU-SNP also provides discovery of genes and pathways related to diseases.
Ongoing projects of GBG involves:
(1) iSNP: Building an integrated SNP database that can automatically synchronize itself with third party public databases to provide up-to-date SNP and its metadata to METU-SNP application
(2) pi-SNP (www.pi-snp.ii.metu.edu.tr) : Transferring METU-SNP desktop application into an web service where different users can register and upload their data using the GWAS pipeline we are offering
